Our Gospel reading today is the story of Zacchaeus from Luke 19. It is a great story of repentance and redemption. In the first reading today from Revelation 3, we hear Jesus addressing the Churches of Sardis and Laodicea. His words to the Church of Laodicea are a stark reminder to all.
“I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” I think today would be a fine day to do a little spiritual temperature check, don’t you? Let’s use a scale of 0-100. If you had to rank your overall rating, where would you fall today? Factor in things like your love for God, your evangelistic zeal, your faithfulness to the teachings of Christ and His Church.
I would think that if you’re anywhere between 25-75, you may be in trouble. I’m not judging here. Jesus Himself is the one who said that if you’re lukewarm He will “spit you out.” If you do fall in that range, ask yourself this: What can I do today to help me heat up my love for Jesus? Now, what are you waiting for? It’s time to crank up the heat!!
Father, forgive us for those times when we are lukewarm in our faith. Light a fire in our hearts that we may be ablaze with love for Christ. Amen.
