As we draw closer to the end of the liturgical year, the Gospel readings continue to allude to the end of days. In today’s reading from Luke 17, Jesus describes what it will be like when the Son of Man returns.
In the first reading from Wisdom 13, the sacred author talks about the foolishness of studying nature, yet not discerning God. “All men were by nature foolish who were in ignorance of God, and who from the good things seen did not succeed in knowing him who is, and from studying the works did not discern the artisan.”
I find it so interesting that this text was written thousands of years ago, and yet still rings so true today. We have made tremendous leaps in scientific knowledge. Unfortunately, this vast knowledge has led many away from God. In their hubris, they fail to see the Creator in the created. Can all this just be random happenstance? I think not. I am a man of a simple mind. To me, the more I know of the complexities of the universe, the more in awe I am of Him Who created all this! Let us pray that we will always be able to discern the hand of God in all things.
Father, you are the Creator of all things, the source of all blessings. May we always see you in every aspect of life and creation. Amen.
