The Couple That Prays Together…

Posted on

There are many touching, beautiful prayers in the Scriptures. Today in our first reading from Tobit, we see a newly married couple praying together. If this doesn’t bring a tear to your eye, then perhaps you need a check up from the neck up. In the Gospel reading, Jesus is asked which is the greatest of the commandments. Perhaps you know His answer. Even if you do, read it again!

Tobiah and Sarah were to become husband and wife. But Sarah had a history. She had been married seven times before, and not one of her husbands had survived the wedding night. Yet Tobiah knew that this was divinely appointed. And so he marries her, knowing the risk. But Tobiah decides to offer up his marriage to the Lord. And so he and Sarah pray together on their wedding night. Read their beautiful prayer. It is one that should be echoed by all married couples. Tobiah says, “I take this wife of mine…for a noble purpose. Call down your mercy on me and on her…”

Whenever I speak about marriage, I offer couples the 60-second challenge. Join hands together and pray for one minute each day. I have heard from many that this has had a profound effect on their marriage. This may be the one key element that most couples are missing to deepen their relationship with God, and with each other. So if you’re not doing it yet, start today! After all, look what it did for Tobiah and Sarah!

Father, we pray for all married couples. Give them the grace to pray together, that they may grow closer to you and to each other. Amen.
