In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 21, Jesus tells a parable to the chief priests and elders about a landowner who owned a vineyard. When the time came to harvest, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce. But rather than produce the yield, they beat, stoned and killed them.
The landowner then sends his son, whom they also killed. When they answered what should happen to those wretched men, Jesus quoted them from Psalm 118. "The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes."
Jesus was, of course, prophesying that the chief priest and elders would reject Him. And so they did. And the Scripture passage was fulfilled. Jesus is the cornerstone of the Church. Is He also the cornerstone of our edifice, our lives? If He's not, the building will invariably crumble.
Father, may our lives, like the Church, be built on the cornerstone of Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
