Today is the Solemnity of All Saints, one of my favorite days of the year. Today is a Holy Day of Obligation, and rightfully so. We celebrate all the holy men and women who have achieved our goal: sainthood. We celebrate the Communion of Saints.
As Catholics, we view the Body of Christ as being three interconnected parts – the Church Triumphant, the Church Militant and the Church Suffering. The Church Militant are those of us on earth, working daily on holiness with the goal of becoming a saint. The Church Suffering are those undergoing the cleansing of Purgatory. And the Church Triumphant are those who are part of the beatific vision – the Saints in heaven!
You see, we don’t view death as a dividing wall. That’s why we pray to saints for their intercession. Just as I would ask you to pray for me, so I can ask any of the saints in heaven to lift up my petition to God. Just another reason why I love being Catholic!
All holy men and women, pray for us. Amen.
