The Blind Shall See

Posted on

In the first reading today from Isaiah 29, the LORD GOD says, “On that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book; And out of gloom and darkness, the eyes of the blind shall see.” In the Gospel reading from Matthew 9, Jesus gives sight to two blind men.

Jesus gave sight to many blind people. We know that those blind people represent us in our spiritual blindness. For those of us who have always had sight, it can be hard to imagine blindness. Can it also be hard for us to imagine our spiritual blindness? What is it that we can’t see?

Here are some ideas: our own faults. Our pridefulness. Our big ego. How easily we bear grudges. Our pettiness. Our lack of generosity. Our lack of faith. Need I go on? I believe the more we ask God to open our eyes, the more clearly we will see these things. At first, having that vision and seeing these things will be painful. But the more we allow God to open our eyes, the more clearly we will see him. And that’s a very good thing.

Father, heal us of our blindness. Open our eyes that we may see you more clearly. Amen.
