Today we’re going to explore a couple of interesting paradoxes in our readings. First from the Gospel reading from Mark 9.
Jesus said, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” The world looks at things from a completely opposite view. In order to be first, you have to be ruthless, step on anyone you need to and take no prisoners. Jesus tells us just the opposite. If we wish to truly be great (in the eyes of God), we must become humble servants.
In our first reading today, St. James says, “Submit yourselves to God. Resist the Devil, and he will flee from you.” What I find so interesting is that we often do just the opposite. We resist God and submit to the Devil. The last verse in today’s first reading sums up the whole matter. “Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.”.
Father, forgive us for the times that we resist you and submit to the Devil. Help us to be humble servants, always submissive to your will. Amen
