Today's Gospel reading from Matthew 8 contains a line that every Catholic should be familiar with. They are the words of a centurion who asked Jesus to heal a servant who was paralyzed and suffering. When Jesus agrees to go to the centurion's home to heal the servant, the centurion replies, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed."
But that's not the end. He then follows, "For I too am a man subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me." Jesus was amazed by his faith. You see, the man was not saying that he was subject to Jesus' authority, but he was acknowledging something even greater - that even sickness (and by extension, death) was subject to Jesus' authority.
This should remind us that everything must be under Jesus' authority. Everything. That means your health, your family, your finances, your work - everything. Is there anything in your life that you have not allowed to be subject to Jesus' authority?
Father, show those areas of our lives not yet subject to Jesus' authority, then help us to surrender them. Amen.
