In today's first reading from 1 Kings 19, Elijah journeys into the desert. He doesn't want to continue on, to the point of asking God for death. So God sends food and the angel of the LORD tells him to eat. "He got up, ate, and drank; then strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb."
Our Gospel reading today continues in John 6, the Bread of Life discourse.
Jesus gives us the Eucharist, His Flesh and Blood, as food for our earthly journey. Just as we are physically strengthened by natural food, so too are we spiritually nourished by that supernatural food - the Bread of Life. If we neglect receiving the Eucharist, we may be able to physically go on, but spiritually we will be malnourished.
Father, we thank you for giving us the Eucharist that gives us strength for our journey. May we remain in a state of grace and receive often. Amen.
