Sowing Seeds of Grace

Posted on

Today's Gospel reading is the parable of the sower from Mark 4. Jesus tells a story of a man who goes out and sows seeds all over. The seeds fall in many different places and the results vary.

The disciples don't understand the parable, so Jesus explains it to them. He tells them, "The sower sows the word." I like to think of these seeds sown as being seeds of grace. For some, Satan comes and steals the seeds; they bear no fruit. For others, the seeds bear fruit, but only for a short time. Things get in the way. For a few, the seeds take root and bear great fruit.

I believe God is always sowing seeds of grace in our lives. And I believe God desires us to be sowers of the seeds of grace. Notice that the sower in the story didn't dig neat furrows and line up each seed. No, he threw the seeds everywhere, letting them land where they may. So it is with us. We should be sowing the seeds of grace indiscriminately, everywhere we go. Just throw them out all along the way and let God do whatever He wishes with them.

Father, may the seeds of grace sown in us bear great fruit, and may we sow seeds of grace into the lives of others this day. Amen.
