What do you boast about? I’m sure you don’t boast, and if you do, it is probably about your kids, grandkids or something or someone other than yourself. But would you ever boast about your weaknesses. Most people probably wouldn’t. But St. Paul did. Check it out in today’s first reading from 2 Corinthians 11.
In our Gospel reading today from Matthew 6, Jesus talks about storing up treasure in heaven. He also says this, “The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.” Wait a minute…is Jesus saying that if you don’t have good vision that you will be in darkness? Of course not.
Jesus is talking about what we allow our eyes to view. There is so much stuff out there competing for your attention, trying to “catch your eye.” Some of it is good. And some is bad – very bad. And what we allow our eyes to view has much bearing on our relationships with others and even God. The best example I can think of is pornography. This is especially troubling for men, as men are very visual creatures. But it is not limited to that. TV, movies, books, magazines – so many things can lead us down a wrong path…if we let them. We must always be VERY careful about what we’re watching, reading and looking at. When we fill our eyes with things that honor God, then the light in us will be greater. And that light will shine forth from us.
Father, help us to be good stewards of our eyes, to focus on the things that glorify you. May the light of Christ be in us, and shine from us. Amen.
