In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 25, Jesus tells the parable of the talents.
In the parable, the master rewards the two servants who invested their talents and got a return. But the third was punished. Why? Did he lose the master’s talent? Did he squander it on women, wine and song? No. In fact, he returned to the master his original investment! Gee, in today’s market, that would be a wonderful thing, wouldn’t it? But this wasn’t good enough for the master. He expected the servant to actively use the talent he had been given.
Interesting that the third servant was punished not for doing something, but for not doing something. God has given us all a talent (at least one) and expects us to use that. Even if we try something and fail, I believe that just the effort pleases God. What doesn’t work is when we bury our talent. When we choose to do nothing. It seems that, when it comes to the gifts that God has given us, sins of omission are greater than sins of commission.
Father, forgive us for those times when we do not use our talents, for whatever reason. Give us the courage to use our talent in whatever way you see fit. Amen.
