Servant Leaders

Posted on

In the Gospel reading today from Mark 10:35-45, James and John ask to sit at Jesus right and left when He comes into His Kingdom. Jesus summons the Twelve and lets them know the score. “Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.”

This notion runs counter to everything that we think. Great people get to be served. They have people at their beck and call. Jesus turns this notion on its ear.

Have you ever been in a leadership position? It can be extremely difficult. If you’ve ever been a part of a team where the leader practices this notion of servant leadership, you probably know exactly what Jesus is talking about. We may never run a giant company or organization. But servant leadership is something that we can practice in most every area of our lives, especially in our family. And it really works best in the spiritual life. The more we serve others, the better we are able to lead them to Christ.

Father, teach us to be good servants, that we may be good leaders, and lead others to your Son. Amen.
