Seize the Day!

What is faith? Ask ten people and you may get ten answers. But the Scriptures give us the answer! It’s right at the start of today’s second reading from Hebrews 11. “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.”

In today’s Gospel from Luke 12, Jesus tells a story about a servant left in charge of his master’s affairs. He begins doing evil things, thinking his master will not return soon. When the master returns at an unexpected time, he severely punishes the servant. Jesus ends the story with, “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”

It seems that today everybody wants their “rights.” Individual freedom has become the new deity. But with rights come responsibilities. Ah, but no one seems to want to talk about this. This is also true in the spiritual life. With gifts come requirements. If God has been generous to us and we hoard or accumulate or squander those blessings, there will be a price to pay. You and I have been entrusted with much. In my case (and probably yours, too), it is even more. I don’t know about you, but I don’t even want to think about the high price to pay for blowing this opportunity. Seize the Day, my friend!

Father, thank you for entrusting us with much, and more. May we be nothing more than faithful servants, using the gifts you have given us in Your service. Amen.
