Seek First the Kingdom

Posted on

The Sermon on the Mount is so beautiful, and so challenging. Today’s Gospel reading from Matthew 6 starts off with Jesus saying, “You cannot serve God and mammon.”

From there, Jesus talks about worrying. That is something I think most people are pretty darn good at. I believe that worry really springs from fear – fear that we are not in control, fear that God will not provide for us or take care of us or our loved ones. Can we overcome this worry? You bet! But how? Jesus gives us the key.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.” When we’re about the business of building up the kingdom of God, we need never worry. We can be assured that God will provide for our every need. So…are you worrying about tomorrow, or are you planning how you can build up the kingdom of God?

Father, forgive us for being such incessant worriers. Help us today to be kingdom builders and seek out your righteousness. Amen.
