Jesus got thrown trick questions and conundrums often by the Pharisees, the scribes, the Saducees and others. In the Gospel reading today from Mark 12, Jesus throws out a tricky question Himself. When talking about the Messiah being the Son of David, Jesus queries, “David himself calls him ‘lord’; so how is he his son?” In other words, how can David’s son be greater than David himself? When the Son of David is the one who created David, that’s how!
In the first reading today from 2 Timothy 3, St. Paul talks about the Sacred Scriptures, “which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” He goes on to say, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” Amen to that, brother!
So many Catholics are intimidated, perhaps even turned off by Scripture. Perhaps this is because they feel as though the Bible is something that Protestants have the market cornered on. But the Bible is a Catholic book! EVERY SINGLE DAY the Church nourishes her children with lots of Scripture in the Liturgy of the Word. Catholics know lots of Scripture. And we should hunger to know even more! Why not resolve to learn more about God’s love letter to us today?
Father, we thank you for your Word in the Sacred Scriptures. May we always have a desire to learn more about you through the reading of the Word. Amen.
