Today is the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in America. A sad day, indeed. At Catholic churches across the United States, today is observed as a day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life. While I certainly encourage you to delve into today’s readings, my reflection on this day turns to the right to life.
I am continually baffled by Christians who stand strong for “a woman’s right to choose.” We all have a right to choose. That is one of the great things about being a Christian. God gives us all free will. How we use that free will is up to us. I have heard it said again and again, “Don’t force your religious beliefs off on me!” In fact, many Catholic politicians hide behind this facade. Shame on them all!
As a society, we must protect the most innocent and vulnerable of all. I believe that in years to come, in our quest for “personal freedom,” this period of history in America will be looked upon as barbaric. How we as a society can condone the killing of innocent human beings is beyond my scope of understanding. And yet the culture of death continues its march. The people in power have bought in hook, line and sinker. But there is hope, my friend. Last I checked, God is still on the throne in heaven. And though we have most certainly lost our way, invariably His will shall be done. May He have mercy on us all.
Father, we pray for your forgiveness for our nation. Help us to come to our senses, to realize that you alone are the giver and taker of life. Give your faithful remnant the grace and courage to continue to stand up for what is right and just. Amen.
