Repent – Or Else

Posted on

Have you ever heard this old expression? God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called. That’s one of the messages that we get from today’s first reading from Ephesians 4.

In today’s Gospel reading from Luke 13, Jesus has some stark words for the people. “But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!” Did that message ever change? Some seem to think so. Perhaps the devil’s greatest ruse is to make us believe we have nothing to repent of.

We know that God’s love is unconditional. God loves us no matter what. However, our salvation is conditional. And the first condition is repentance. When Jesus began His public ministry, His first word was “repent.” He repeated that message over and over. If we fail to repent, God will still love us. But we won’t be spending eternity with him.

Father, may we always have a repentant spirit. Help us to acknowledge our sins, and give us a firm purpose of amendment. Amen.
