In the Gospel reading from John 10, we hear Jesus speaking again about sheep and shepherds. He says, "When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers."
There are a lot of voices vying for our attention these days. Is it difficult to discern which one is the voice of the Lord? It would seem a no-brainer, but perhaps it's not that easy. I think sometimes we convince ourselves that the voice of Jesus is the one telling us what we want to hear. But in reality, the voice of Jesus is the one telling us to take a more difficult, sacrificial path. Do you recognize that voice? Will you obey?
Father, help to hear the voice of the Lord, especially through all the noise and the other voices that wish to lead us astray. Amen.
