Receiving the Ones Jesus Sends

Posted on

In our first reading today from Acts 13, St. Paul gives a history lesson to those gathered in the synagogue in Antioch.

In the Gospel reading from John 13, Jesus says to the Twelve, "Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."

The word "Apostle" means one who is sent. Jesus sent out the Twelve with His authority. Just yesterday we celebrated the Feast of St. Matthias, the first successor of the Apostles. As Catholics, our bishops continue in that line of succession. Thus, we must "receive" our bishops, especially the Bishop of Rom, the Pope. Now, this doesn't mean we will always agree with everything our bishop or pope says or does. But we must respect the office, and show due deference to the man who occupies that office. That doesn't mean they won't botch things now and again. And when they do, they should be corrected. But obedience is part of our calling.

Father, give us the grace of obedience to the ones whom you send, those in authority over us. Amen.
