Reason for Rejoicing

Posted on

In today's Gospel reading from Luke 10, the seventy-two disciples return to Jesus rejoicing. They say, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name."

Jesus answers them, "Do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven." While they were thrilled about earthly things, Jesus wanted them to look at the bigger picture, to be thrilled about heavenly things.

Isn't the same true for us? We get so excited about things of the world. Now, I don't think it's wrong to rejoice about blessings we receive here on earth. But are we seeing the bigger picture? Are we focused on eternity? After all, eternal life with God is certainly reason for rejoicing!

Father, help us to keep our minds fixed on heavenly things. Amen.
