In today's Gospel reading, Jesus tells the parable of the weeds and the wheat. In the first reading from Exodus 24, Moses tells the people all the words and ordinances of the LORD.
The people cry out, "We will do everything that the LORD has told us." Moses then sprinkles the people with the blood of the sacrifice, sealing the covenant.
Of course the people were well intentioned. I'm sure they thought they meant what they said. But it would not be long before they were worshiping idols and going astray. It seems that promises made were not necessarily promises kept. But that's never happened to us, has it?
Father, forgive us for breaking our promises, to others, and to you. Amen.
