Progress in the Spiritual Life

Posted on

In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 25, Jesus tells the parable of the talents. In our first reading from 1 Thessalonians 4, St. Paul talks about much of the spiritual life. He commends the people for their great love for one another. He then goes on.

"Nevertheless we urge you, brothers, to progress even more, and to aspire to live a tranquil life, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your own hands, as we instructed you."

Progress in the spiritual life is an ongoing process. It's funny, the older I get the more I see how much more progress I need to make in the spiritual life. I'm sure you feel the same way. We can always get closer to God. There will always be a gap, at least until we are part of the beatific vision. Let's try daily to close that gap.

Father, help us today to progress ever closer to you. Amen.
