Jesus was a very controversial figure. Still is to many. In today’s Gospel reading from John 7, we see some of that controversy.
Some people believed Jesus to be the Prophet. Others said He was the Christ. But some doubted because of where He was from. “The Christ will not come from Galilee, will he? Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will be of David’s family and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived? See that no prophet arises from Galilee.”
The people had prejudged Jesus. They thought they knew His story. (Little did they know that He was born in Bethlehem.) How often does this happen to us? We prejudge people because of where they’re from or the color of their skin or their religious affiliation or…fill in the blank. Prejudice is an easy trap to fall into. Perhaps we should withhold judgment until we know the whole story.
Father, forgive us for our many prejudices. Help us to hear out peoples’ stories and see their heart. Amen.
