Today is kind of New Year's Eve for Catholics. It is the end of the liturgical year. Tomorrow is the First Sunday of Advent, the beginning of a new liturgical year. We've been going through the Book of Revelation and hearing much about the end times from Jesus in Luke's Gospel.
In today's Gospel reading from Luke 21, Jesus says, "Be vigilant at all times and pray the you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man."
Trials and tribulations are hard. We all have them. And the easy way would be to throw up our hands and give up. We need strength to carry on, to keep the faith. That strength does not come from ourselves. It comes from God. That's why Jesus implores us to pray for strength. Perhaps we could modify a familiar prayer for this need.
Father, give us this day our daily strength, that we may stand before the Son of Man. Amen.
