Pray for Marriages

Posted on

In today’s Gospel reading from Mark 10, Jesus talks about marriage. “But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.”

Any time I talk about marriage I risk alienating lots of people. Those who have been through divorce feel outcast or put off. Those who believe that two people of the same sex constitutes a marriage call me a homophobe, bigot or hater. Doesn’t it seem odd that talking about marriage these days is fraught with peril?

I don’t want to get into any arguments today.  Jesus’ teachings on marriage are quite clear. I simply ask you to pray for marriages. That husbands and wives and will truly be one flesh. That married couples will put God at the center of their lives, their families and their marriages. Only when that happens will we begin to see more and more good fruit be borne.

Father, help husbands and wives truly be one flesh. May all married couples glorify you in their lives, families and marriages. Amen.

    No “argument” from me Gus!

In our 20+ years in Pre-Cana ministry, we have tried to instill (credit to Fr. Joe Fitzgerald for this!) that the primary role of a spouse is to help the other get to Heaven. It’s hard to be selfish and inconsiderate when that goal is kept in mind.
