Pondering the Incarnation

Posted on

For today’s first reading, we are back in 1 John 2. Today St. John writes about the antichrist. Very interesting stuff, especially for those hard core “end-timers.” Those are the people who keep telling us that we are in the end times. Well, 1900 years ago, St. John said the same thing. Read today’s reading. St. John says that “many antichrists have appeared. Thus we know this is the last hour.” How could that be? After all, here we are, still here 1900 years later! Look, Jesus may come back today, or 10,000 years from now. Whenever that is, we need to be ready.

Today’s Gospel passage is the beginning of St. John’s Gospel. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” St. John’s Gospel is full of theology, Christology. It is from this opening passage that we begin to unfold the mystery of the Trinity. And, just a few verses later, the Incarnation comes to light. “And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” Can you imagine?!?! The Author of Life, the God of the Universe decided to come down and hang with us for a while. Amazing!

Yet it is so. This is our Christian faith. This is the message of Christmas! Today is the seventh day in the Octave of Christmas. If you haven’t taken a few moments yet to really ponder the Incarnation, take a few moments to do that now. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. I hope that this will always blow us away!

Father, thank you for your Word, your only begotten Son, Christ Jesus, who came to dwell among us. May we never tire of pondering this great mystery, and be always grateful for this gift. Amen.
