How strong are you in your faith? How much are you willing to suffer for your faith? In our first reading today from 1 Maccabees 1, we read that “many in Israel were determined and resolved in their hearts not to eat anything unclean; they preferred to die rather than to be defiled with unclean food or to profane the holy covenant; and they did die.” Do we have that same kind of conviction in our hearts?
In our Gospel reading today from Luke 18, a blind man hears that Jesus is passing by. The blind man cries out, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” The people try to quiet him, but he shouts out all the more. Finally, Jesus asks him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replies, “Lord, please let me see.” And Jesus gives him his sight.
The two things that the blind man says have always been prayers of mine. “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” And, “Lord, please let me see.” I am fortunate enough to have my sight. And yet my spiritual vision is cloudy at best. If only I could see the world, and especially other people, through the eyes of Jesus. I suppose there’s another “body part” that is tied to this equation. When our hearts are changed, I believe our vision will improve.
Father, we join in the prayer of the blind man today as we pray, “Lord, please let me see.” Help us to see everything through your eyes. Amen.
