Path, Rock, Thorns, Rich Soil

Posted on

Today's Gospel is from Luke 8, the parable of the sower. A sower goes out to sow some seed and it falls in many different places. Some falls on the path, some on rocky ground, some among the thorns and some on rich soil.

I'm always struck by how this could happen. Didn't the sower sow carefully? Didn't he want the seeds to bear fruit? Why didn't he plant them in neat little furrows? Why would he be so cavalier or careless about where the seed was going?

The answer has everything to do with what Jesus says at the beginning of His explanation. "The seed is the word of God." The sower sowed indiscriminately. He let the word of God go wherever the Holy Spirit directed it. This is how we, too, should sow the word. Share the word of God with everyone, indiscriminately. Then let the Holy Spirit take it from there. (This can be very difficult for the timid or the control freak.)

Father, give us the courage to sow your word wherever we go, trusting that the Holy Spirit will take it from there. Amen.
