Out of the Dungeon

Posted on

The Gospel reading for the Monday of Holy Week is the story of Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha, anointing the feet of Jesus. When Judas protests, Jesus replies, "Leave her alone. Let her keep the for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me."

For these first three days of Holy Week, our first readings will be from the Servant of the Lord prophesies from Isaiah. Today we read that the messiah would be sent "To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness."

You probably don't live in a dungeon. Or do you? I believe that sometimes we dwell in dungeons, often of our own making. These dungeons are built of resentment, unforgiveness, anger, envy, hatred, prejudice...the list goes on and on. Jesus came to free us from these dungeons. If you're living in darkness, look to the Light. He's there, at the door of your dungeon, beckoning you to come out!

Father, give us the grace to allow Jesus to release us from our dungeon, as we follow the Light of the World. Amen.
