Today's first reading from Philippians 3 is so appropriate for Americans, given our recent election. St. Paul starts out by talking about people who "conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction. Their God is their stomach; their glory is in their 'shame.' Their minds are occupied with earthly things." Sound familiar?
St. Paul has the antidote. "But our citizenship is in heaven. Therefore...in this way stand firm in the Lord, beloved."
So many folks seem to be obsessed with politics these days. Of course we're called to be good citizens here on earth. But I can assure you that no politician or political party can save your soul. We must always put our allegiance to Christ above all else. While I am proud to be an American, no matter what country we hail from, our true citizenship is in heaven.
Father, help us to always pledge allegiance to Christ first, remembering our true citizenship in heaven. Amen.
