Our Guiding Star

Posted on

In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 21, Jesus' authority is questioned. He makes a deal with His interlocutors, but they cannot fulfill the deal. Read how it all goes down.

In the first reading from Numbers 24, Balaam utters this prophecy: "A star shall advance from Jacob, and a staff shall rise from Israel." One may think this was a prophecy about the star of Bethlehem, which pointed the Wise Men to Jesus. But that would be a misreading.

Jesus is the star of this prophecy. And rightfully so. Jesus is our guiding star. Just as the North Star has been a sure guide for travelers for time immemorial, so Jesus is for us. When we follow this star, we will never be led astray. As we draw closer to Him, He will lead us on the sure path the eternal life.

Father, may we always use Jesus as our guiding star, as He leads us to you. Amen.
