One Flesh

Posted on

Today's Gospel reading from Matthew 19 is Jesus' teaching on marriage. This is the passage on which the Church bases her teaching on the indissolubility  of marriage. It is unchangeable because it comes directly from the Lord. I want to reflect on another aspect of Jesus' teaching today.

"Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator made them male and female and said, For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh."

This is one of the great mysteries of the Sacrament of Matrimony. Two unique individuals becoming one flesh. While the two retain their unique identities, they truly become one. Think of this like God - the Trinitarian nature of God. Three persons, one God. How? It is a mystery. And yet it is so. Same with a husband and wife. They are two, but they are one. Let us pray for that oneness in all marriages.

Father, thank you for the gift of marriage. May husbands and wives keep you at the center of their lives and marriages, that they may truly be one. Amen.
