On This Mountain

Posted on

Mountains are a big deal. (See what I did there?) Scripture is filled with stories from and references to mountains. That's a theme in today's readings.

In the first reading from Isaiah 25, we read what the LORD will do "on this mountain." And in the Gospel reading from Matthew 15, Jesus feeds the multitude on a mountain.

The ancients believed they were closer to God when on a mountain. Mountains play a critical role in salvation history - Mt. Zion, Mt. Moriah, Mount Sinai, Mt. Calvary, just to name a few. And we often speak of "mountaintop" experiences, those times when we experience God in a unique way. May God lead us up the mountain to our final destination - heaven.

Father, help us to ascend the mountain where we will see you face to face. Amen.
