On Being a Sheep

Posted on

Today is Good Shepherd Sunday. Our Gospel reading is from John 10 and begins with Jesus saying, "I am the good shepherd."

It's often pointed out that sheep are not the brightest of animals. One may rightly wonder why the Lord wanted to compare His followers with sheep. So perhaps here is a possible answer.

Sheep are trusting. They know their shepherd and trust him implicitly. If the shepherd led them in front of a freight train, they would go. Perhaps this is the quality of a sheep that we should focus on. Trust. Let us trust the Good Shepherd and go wherever He leads us. Because in the end, He will lead us to everlasting life.

Father, help us to be good sheep, to trust Jesus, our Good Shepherd, and go wherever He may lead us. Amen.
