Of Vines and Branches

Posted on

Today's Gospel reading from John 15 is really about life in Christ - or, as Christians think of it, life. Jesus talks about vines and branches.

"Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing."

If you've ever cut a branch off of a vine, you know it can "stay alive" for a short time. It takes a little while for it to wither up completely. So is with us and Jesus. If we cut ourselves off from Him, we can "survive" for a short time. Then we will die, not just physically, but eternally. Only when we reconnect or re-attach can we hope to live. Best advice: Never cut yourself off from Jesus in the first place.

Father, give us the grace to always stay attached to Jesus. Amen.
