In today's Gospel reading from Mark 7, Jesus has some harsh words for the Pharisees. He says of them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, hypocrites, as it is written:
"This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me..."
Sometimes we can put on a pretty good show. We go to Mass (a very good thing), pray all the right prayers and let the world know how much we honor God. But our hearts? Well, that can be a whole other story there. It's a good thing to pray and vocalize our honor for God. But if the heart doesn't match up with the lips, it really means nothing. Let's make sure we're always working on getting the heart right first.
Father, as we honor you with our lips, may our hearts honor you ever more. Amen.
