Not an Orphan

Posted on

In today's Gospel reading from John 14, the disciples are with Jesus in the upper room. Jesus knows what is about to happen. He says to the disciples, "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you."

I recently attended the funeral of our dear friend John. He and  his family have been like family to us for decades. John's wife Marie passed away years ago. When John died, his daughters had the feeling of being orphans. Both of their parents were now gone. Jesus knew His disciples would feel like orphans on His death.

When we lose someone we love, there's a hole in our heart. This is especially true when our parents go to their heavenly home. And there may be times when we feel spiritually orphaned. But that is never objectively true. God is always with us, and we have hope that we will be reunited with our parents and those who have gone before us. You are not an orphan, and you never will be.

Father, we know you are always with us, and will never leave us orphaned. May we always feel your presence, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
