In today's Gospel reading from John 17, we listen in on Jesus prayer to the Father at the Last Supper. In our first reading from Acts 20, we hear the first part of Paul's farewell speech to the church at Ephesus.
There are two instances of a particular word in Paul's address. "I did not at all shrink from telling you what was for your benefit." "I did not shrink from proclaiming to you the entire plan of God."
It's easy for us to shrink when faced with opposition or adversity. I submit this is the plan of the secularists today - to intimidate Christians and get us to shrink, to back down and cower. Paul would have none of that. He was no shrinking violet. Neither should we be. The times we are in require growing in boldness, not shrinking.
Father, fill us with a spirit of zeal, that we may not shrink from proclaiming the truth. Amen.
