In the first reading today from Exodus 12, we read about the aftermath of the Passover. The people of Israel fled from their bondage of slavery in Egypt. This time of slavery was not a short-lived thing. "The time the children of Israel had stayed in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years."
Think about that for a moment. Four hundred and thirty years. Ten generations of Hebrews knew nothing but slavery. It was their way of life. And like any long time way of life, it became the norm - perhaps even comfortable.
Imagine being comfortable in your slavery. It sounds preposterous, doesn't it? But remember how easy it is for us to fall into sin - even to become slaves to sin. Yet we do. And often times, I dare say, we become comfortable in that slavery. But just as God delivered the children of Israel from slavery, so can He do for us. Repent, confess and throw off your chains! No more slavery!
Father, deliver us from our sinful ways. May we repent and accept your grace and forgiveness through Christ our Lord. Amen.
