In today’s Gospel reading from Mark 12, Jesus is asked, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” His answer may have surprised some. He gives not a singular answer, but a plural one. Read it for yourself and ask God how you’re doing with that.
In the first reading today from 2 Timothy 2, St. Paul writes, “If we have died with him we shall also live with him; if we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him, he will deny us. If we are unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.”
Now, none of us would ever deny Jesus, right? (Hmm…seems to be that St. Peter probably thought the exact same thing.) But we must ask ourselves if we are already denying Him. Are there areas of your life where you are not being faithful to His teachings? Maybe with your finances, your sexuality, your church attendance – the list goes on. Could it be that when we sin, when we choose to turn our back on Him that we are really denying Him? Let’s pray that we can stop denying Him, and that in the end we will hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Father, you know how often we turn our backs on Jesus and deny Him. Help us to be faithful in every area of our lives. Amen.
