Every now and again a history lesson is in order. In today's first reading from Joshua 24, Joshua gives that lesson to the children of Israel. In fact, Holy Mass is something of a history lesson for us. Why are these needed? Because those who fail to learn from history are destined to repeat it.
In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 19, Jesus teaches about marriage. Some Pharisees ask Jesus if it is okay to divorce. Jesus says no and says, "...from the beginning it was not so." He then tells them that "whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery."
God ordained marriage from the beginning. He made Adam and Eve to be in a lifelong, committed, fruitful relationship. That was God's design for marriage then, and still is today...despite what many may say. Let us pray for all marriages, that God will be in the center.
Father, we ask your blessing on marriages. May husbands and wives keep you at the center of their lives and their marriage. Amen.
