Love is…You?

Posted on

Today’s first reading is from 1 Corinthians 13. In fact, it is the whole chapter. It is known as “The Love Chapter.” More on that in a moment. In the Gospel today from Luke 7, Jesus gives a scenario that kind of says, “You just can’t please anybody.” Check it out for yourself.

If you have ever been to a wedding, chances are good you may have heard the Love Chapter. It is a reading that is very popular at weddings because it talks about all the things that love is – and isn’t. Many years ago, (empahsis on MANY) I was at a retreat where the leader had us go through an excercise with 1 Corinthians 13. We were told to read the chapter and every time we saw the word “love,” we were to replace it with our name. My challenge to you today is to give that a try.

At first you will probably be very uncomfortable. I know I am. Gus is patient. Gus is kind. Gus does not seek his own interests. Gus is not quick-tempered. If you’re like me, you’ll feel like it’s a fairy tale. I’m not all those things. But I should be. And as a Christian, I am called to be all of those things. And so are you. So try today’s challenge. Hey, at least it gives us something to shoot for!

Father, help us today to be love. Amen.
