Lord of the Sabbath - And Everything Else

Posted on

We get a wonderful word about persevering in the faith in our first reading today from Colossians 1. St. Paul says that we will be presented “holy, without blemish, and irreproachable before him, provided that you persevere in the faith…” The New Testament is rife with allusions to perseverance. Yes, my friend…heaven ain’t for quitters.

In the Gospel reading from Luke 6, some Pharisees give Jesus a hard time because his disciples were picking heads of grain on the sabbath. They ask, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?” Jesus then reminds them of a story about King David eating what was forbidden by law. He then tells them, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.”

Jesus exercised his authority in different ways. Casting out demons, healing, teaching. Most of the time He did it just through His actions. But occasionally, He had to tell people (read: Pharisees) about His authority. This was one of those instances. Jesus was making the point that He is Lord of all. There is nothing that does not fall under His authority. So what about you? Is there any thing in your life that doesn’t fall under the authority of Christ?

Father, help us to give ourselves completely to the authority of Christ Jesus. Show us those places where He is not lord, and help us to give those up. Amen.
