Today’s first reading is from Ephesians 4:1-6. You may notice that these six verses are all one sentence. St. Paul is famous for his run-on sentences. It can sometimes be brutal if you’re a lector at Mass!
St. Paul writes, “I…urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received…” Let’s start there. First, St. Paul accepts as fact that his audience has received a call. This is obviously a high calling; otherwise why would they need to “live in a manner worthy” of this call? So how are believers (those who are called) supposed to carry this out? St. Paul gives the answer.
“With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace.” Humility, gentleness, patience, love, unity, peace. Do you need to work on any of these things in your life? I sure do. Let’s get to work on them today, so that we may live in a manner worthy of the call we have received.
Father, we thank you for calling us. Help us to live in a manner worthy of that call. Amen.
