Do you remember the old Bob Seger tune, Like a Rock? It was used in a Chevy commercial for many years. I suspect that was a pretty successful campaign. Why do I bring that up today? Because "rock" is a theme of today's readings.
In the first reading from Isaiah 26 we read, "Trust in the LORD forever! For the LORD is an eternal Rock." And in the Gospel reading from Matthew 7, Jesus says, "Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock."
Back to our classic rock song. Is God like a rock? Is faith in Jesus like a rock? Perhaps surprisingly to some, the answer is no. God is not LIKE a rock. God is THE ROCK! (Notice in Isaiah 26, Rock is a proper noun.) So when you put your trust in God through faith in Jesus, you're not trusting something like a rock. You are trusting the Rock.
Father, you are our foundation, our Rock. We put all our trust in you, through your Son, Christ Jesus. Amen.
