Let Your “Yes” Mean “Yes”

Posted on

Liturgically, today is an interesting day. It is the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the feast of St. Anthony of Padua. Optional readings today are for Ordinary Time. That’s what we’ll work on today. In the Gospel today, Jesus talks about swearing oaths, and about the importance of our word. He says, “Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.'”

I’m a pretty old guy. In fact, I’m so old that I remember when a man’s word was his bond. People did business with just a handshake. Imagine that! Ah, how I long for those days again. Honestly, I think it is still that way with most folks. But our society contiues to evolve in the other direction. Ever think to yourself, “You can’t trust anyone anymore?” Small wonder.

It seems as though everyone is suing everyone for anything or nothing these days. We’ll see you in court! If only we said what we meant and meant what we said. Jesus taught us not only to do that, but HOW to do that. Maybe we can follow His example more and more in our lives.

Father, help us to be people of our word. Give us the grace to be more honest in dealing with others, and with You. Amen.
