In the first reading today from Job, God really lets Job have it with a series of questions. “Have you ever in your lifetime commanded the morning and shown the dawn its place?” “Tell me, if you know all: Which is the way to the dwelling place of light, and where is the abode of darkness, that you may take them to their boundaries and set them on their homeward paths?” Of course, these are all rhetorical questions that God asks Job.
There’s an old saying that goes like this:
There are two rules in life.
Rule #1: There is a God.
Rule #2: You ain’t Him.
Too often we like to supplant God, though, don’t we? We think that we know better than Him; that He couldn’t possibly understand the complexity of the situation in which we find ourselves. You want complexity? Try making a human being. Or an aardvark or a zebra or anything in between. Oh, God knows. He knows much better than you and me. So what say we stop our pretending and just let God be God.
Father, forgive us for the many times when we try to take your place. Teach us to let you be God and Lord over every aspect of our lives, and everything else. Amen.
