Lacking in One Thing

Posted on

Our God is a God of second chances. That's one of the beautiful things about our faith. It's never too late to repent and turn back to God. This is borne out in the first line of our first reading from Sirach 17. "To the penitent God provides a way back..."

The Gospel reading today features the exchange between Jesus and "the rich young man." After the young man informs Jesus that he has observed the commandments all his life, Jesus says to him, "You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." The rich young man couldn't go along with that plan.

What is the one thing the rich young man was missing? Generosity? We don't know that. He may have been extremely generous. A detachment from things? It appears he did lack that. But I submit it was something even greater. Trust. He didn't trust God enough to know that God would provide for him even if he lost (or gave away) everything. Could that be the one thing we are lacking?

Father, forgive us for our lack of trust. Help us trust that you will always take care of us, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
