Kingdom and Yeast

Posted on

What an interesting story in our first reading from Jeremiah 13. It is about a loincloth – we would think of it in terms of underwear today. The root of the story is about pride.

In the Gospel reading today from Matthew 13, we hear a couple more parables from Jesus. The first compares the Kingdom of heaven to a mustard seed. In the second, Jesus likens the Kingdom of heaven to yeast. Why yeast?

Yeast changes the very nature of bread. It causes it to rise and grow. It will no longer be flat, but become much more dimensional. This analogy works on a couple of different levels. First, the personal – when we become more fully part of the Kingdom, we are changed. And, as the Kingdom spreads through the world, the world is changed. Are you ready to be yeast in the world today? To help it change and grow?

Father, may we be yeast in the lives of others, and in the world. Help us to rise and grow, as we seek to help others do the same. Amen.
